There are many reasons that a patient may choose to exchange an implant. Reasons may include deflation of a saline implant or a desire to change the implant size or type (i.e. silicone to saline). Most women who get implants will have their implants exchanged for similar ones within 10 to 15 years after surgery period. This implant exchange procedure is generally much easier than the original surgery, since the pocket for the breast implant already exists.
There are also reasons to do an explantation and reimplantation of an implant. This can include abnormal appearance or feel to the implant, or a need to place the implant in a different anatomical location. This procedure is usually more involved than your original surgery because it involves taking out the old implants with the surrounding scar capsule and creating a new pocket for the new implants.
Your results: Breast implant exchange recovery is generally much quicker. Patients return to work as soon as they feel ready.
Breast implant explantation and reimplantation recovery is usually more difficult than the original breast augmentation surgery. Drains may be needed. Patients return to work after the drains have been removed and they feel ready, usually in 2-3 weeks.
There are also many options for postoperative pain management. Incisions will continue to heal and flatten for up to a year.
